The little toy dog is covered with dust,
But sturdy and staunch he stands;
The little toy soldier is red with rust,
And his musket moulds in his hands.
Time was when the little toy dog was new,
And the soldier was passing fair;
And that was the time when our Little Boy Blue
Kissed them and put them there.

この小さなおもちゃの犬はほこりにまみれている、
でもしっかり忠実に立っている；
この小さなおもちゃの兵隊はさびで赤くなっている、

※：　訳154でWaltz for Debbyを訳したが、この歌詞に似た内容の歌を、ビル･エヴァンスとも共演したことのあるルシー･リードが歌っているので紹介する。

作詞のフィールドはアメリカの詩人/ジャーナリストで子供向けの詩が有名。元は詩作として1888年に発表されたものらしい。
作曲のネヴィンは、ピアニスト、作曲家であるが彼の作品として一番知られているのは、 Mighty Lak' a Rose だろう。


シンディ･ルーパーのBoy Blueはエイズで亡くなった友人を歌ったものであり、タイトルはユージーン･フィールドの詩から作られたものであるという。歌詞中にも
　　Tell me where is little boy blue
というフレーズがある。


またこのタイトルは英米の童謡であるマザーグースにもあるが、この童謡の存在があった上で作られた詩なのかと思う。

Little boy blue, come blow your horn
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
Where is that boy who looks after the sheep?
Under the haystack fast asleep
Will you wake him? Oh no, not I
For if I do he will surely cry


マザーグースの和訳はいくつかありインターネット上でも見ることができる。 Little Boy Blue というフレーズは「弱虫坊や」「泣き虫君」「青い服の少年」「少年ブルー君」などさまざまに訳されているが、ここでは「弱虫坊や」とした。

You Tube では別のメロディーで歌っているもの、詩として朗読しているものなどがあり、ルーシー・リードが歌った歌がどんなものか分かりづらいので、アイリッシュ・テナーのジョン・マコーマックの You Tube にアップされた録音を載せる。
