※　妖婦メイム伝といった所。しかし彼女の熱いキスがシカゴ大火事の原因になったなど、アメリカ人好みのほら話に近いものがある。

映画「ギルダ」でリタ・ヘイワースの見せ場 (vehicle) となった歌だが、彼女は歌えなかったので声は吹き替えによった。
この歌で歌われるメイムは、映画でのギルダのキャラクター・イメージが歌われているのだろうが、ギルダという役はそのまま当時のセックス・シンボルとなったリタのイメージに生涯付きまとうことになった。

オリアリー夫人(Mrs. O'Leary) は1871年のシカゴ大火の原因となったとされる牝牛の持ち主だったと言われる伝説上の女性。

シミー (shimmy または shim and shake) は1920年代に流行った、上半身を揺らすダンスのこと。（ボディは固定し左右の肩を前後させ肘は軽く曲げるその踊りは現在でも多くのダンスの振り付けに残っている）
「シスター・ケイト」というクラシック・ジャズがあるが原題は I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate で「ケイト姉ちゃんのようにシミーを踊りたい」という意味。

1907年にカナダで発表された詩集 The Song of Sourdough (古参探鉱者の歌）にある物語詩 The Shooting of Dan McGrew のことを指すと思われる。
詩の内容は「1890年代、カナダ、クロンダイクでのゴールドラッシュのころ、粗野な金鉱掘りのダン・マグルーと開拓者の娘でルーという恋人がいた。ある日酒場に、汚れた身なりの見知らぬ男が訪れ客に酒をおごり、ピアノを弾き歌を歌った。歌の内容はダンとルーの過去の因縁のことを歌ったもので、恨みのこもったものだった。銃撃戦が起き、ダンとその男は死ぬ。ルーと呼ばれた女が恋人であった男の有り金をくすね逃げたから。」といった内容のようだ。

フーチイ・クー (hoochy-coo) は、hoochie-coochie または cooch と言う腰をくねらせる踊りのことらしい。
この言葉は猥雑な意味もあるためかシート・ミュージック版の歌詞は多少異なる。シート版は「メイムがダンスを踊りはじめ扇を落とした」というような歌詞になっている。『扇を落とす』とは、 Hooray for Hollywood でも述べたが、小さな扇子ではなく体を覆うくらい大きな羽根扇のことだろう。

マーク・マーフィーが Playing the Field というアルバムで、２番、3番を替え歌で歌った版を訳した。アルバムが作られたのは 1960年だが当時記憶に新しい話題を歌にしている。
　●ＴＶシリーズ「アンタッチャブル」は1959年放映開始された。
　●ドジャーズがブルックリンからロスアンジェルスに本拠地を移したのは1958年。


ドリス・フィッシャーは、Chicago (That Toddling Town) などで有名なフレッド・フィッシャーの娘で兄弟のマーヴィン、ダン・フィッシャーもソング・ライター。ブルックリン出身のアラン・ロバーツは何人かの作詞家との共作もあるが、ドリス・フィッシャーとの作品が多い。ビリー・ホリデイの That Old Devil Called Love もこのコンビの作品。
