さらに追跡するため猟犬を投入しても

※　別名 Long Gone John (from Blowlin' Green) というアンチ・ヒーロー物語。訳はルイ・アームストロングの歌を基にした（下に原歌詞を載せる）。ボウリン・グリーンはケンタッキー州の都市 Bowling Green のことだろう。

他のハンディ作品同様この歌は南部黒人民謡を採譜、版権取得したもので、 Lost John, Long John, Long John Dean などのヴァリエーションをもったケンタッキー民謡が元という。発売された楽譜は「 Casey Jones あるいは Steamboat Bill の別種」という非難もあったという ( Songsters and Saints より)

Remembering the Old Songs という伝統音楽サイトでは原曲の一種と思われる歌 LONG JOHN GREEN (LOST JOHN) について説明があり載っている歌詞もほぼ同じだ。その解説の抄訳は以下のとおり、
『いずれの社会でも境遇を切り抜けるヒーローはつくられる。モーゼやキリストのように、人を鼓舞する秩序の指導者として。一方ジェシー・ジェイムズやジョン・ヘンリーのような、下層階級から生まれた無法のヒーローも存在する・・・秘密裏に伝えられた Old John 物語は、従順なふりをして主人を欺く奴隷の話であり、それは収容所から脱走した Lost John という歌に姿を変えて行ったと思われる。この歌は、例えば両端にヒールがついた靴を履いて追手を欺いたといった類の歌詞が残っている。この歌は南部黒人間では知られていたが、剽窃の達人ハンディはあるヴァージョンの版権を取り、それを出版した。別のヴァージョンはハーモニカの匠の作品に、そして別のものはミンストレルで評判をとった・・・』
