※ アイルランド生れのバラッド。作詞・作曲のクレジットは多少異なる記述もあり、『Gems of English Song という２重唱、４重唱の（ピアノ伴奏つき）歌曲集に加えられて、
1875年にアメリカのボストンで出版された』と記されているケースもあれば、 『作詞は Molloy 、作曲者不詳。最初の８小節は、1790年に英国で発表された、 The Cuckoo (w.m. Mararet Casson) をベースにしている』と記述する資料もある。

ケリーはアイルランド南西部の県名で山岳地帯が多いという。
原文の piper は、 Uilleann Pipes （イリアン・パイプ）と呼ばれる、アイルランドの民族楽器（バグパイプの仲間）の奏者を指すと思われる。
