歌の素材となったジュール・レオタール

※　タイトルは、The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze, The Daring Young Man, The Man On The Flying Trapeze, The Flying Trapeze などのヴァリエーションがある。

この歌は多少歌詞の異なる２つの歌詞ヴァージョンがあるが、上は映画「或る夜の出来事」 (It Happened One Night, 1934) で使われたオキーフ版（多分）の訳。（歌詞ソースは、インターネット KIDiddles を参考にした ）

この歌詞は１９世紀の英国ミュージック・ホールの歌手ジョージ・レイバーンが作った歌（オリジナル版）をベースにコメディアンのウォルター・オキーフが1933年に改作し紹介したもので、この版の方が比較的よく聞かれる。

歌詞内容はオリジナル版と多少異なる部分はあるが、語られるストーリーは基本的に同じである。
1944年にイーリング・スタジオで制作された、ジョージ・レイバーン及び同時代のミュージック・ホールの歌手たちを描いた英国映画 Champagne Charlie ではステージ上でレイバーンが歌うシーンが見られるが、メロディーも多少異なっていた。

wikipedia によるとこの歌は、1867年当時人気のあった空中ブランコ曲芸師のジュール・レオタール （Jules Léotard) にインスパイアされた歌とのこと。
（注：レオタール自身の私生活を歌っているものではないだろうが、ワルツ・タイムのコーラスはいかにも空中ブランコで曲芸師が豪快かつ優雅に飛んでいる様子を彷彿させる。）

フランス人レオタールは、空中ブランコの演技で最初に空中回転やブランコ間ジャンプ演技をした人であり、 1861 年にロンドンのミュージック・ホールで英国デビューした時は食事客の上を飛んで演技をしたという。
彼は筋肉を強調するように体にぴったりとした上下ワンピースの衣装を着けたが、彼の名から推測できるように体操着のレオタードという言葉は彼の名をとったもので、最初にこの用語が使われたのは1886年の英国でのことという。
なお、 wiki によると、原曲は多分オッフェンバックのバレー曲「蝶々」(Le Papillon, 1860) 第二幕第一場からの曲と推測されるとのこと。
