When an early autumn walks the land

初秋が大地に歩み寄り、
風を冷たくし、
そして彼女（秋）の手が
夏の木々に触れるとき、
多分君は分かってくれる、
僕に残された思い出がどんなものか。

雨に濡れた公園のダンス場は、
全てシャッターを下ろされ、
曲がりくねった田舎道は茶褐色となり、
霜の降りた窓ガラスを見ると、
町が更に寂しくなっていることに僕は気づく。

あの僕達の春のはじまりは
四月の心にあふれ、
まるで少年少女のためにだけ作られた春みたいだった。
僕は夢にも思わなかったんだ、君もそうだろ、
　この秋がそんなに早く姿を見せようなんて。

ダーリン、もしまだ気があるなら、
どうか教えて、
僕は君に会いにどこへでも行くよ。
君がいなくてとても寂しいんだ。
もう新たな初秋を、
　二人で共に迎えることはなしにしよう。

　オリジナルは1948年頃のウッディ・ハーマン楽団でのスタン・ゲッツの演奏（サマー・シークエンス・第4部）。これにマーサーが 1952 年詩を加え、ウディ・ハーマン楽団が Early Autumn というタイトルで初録音した。
