WRECK OF THE OLD 97

They gave him his orders down at Monroe, Virginia,
Saying, "Steve, you're way behind time;
This is not 38, but it's Old 97,
You must set her into Spencer on time."

※　クレイグ・ライスのミステリー『スィートホーム殺人時間』で親子がこの歌を歌うシーンがあったが、これは実際の事件を元に作られた教訓的なバラッド。

曲のベースにあるのは 1856年にヘンリー・クレイ・ワークによって書かれた説話的なバラッド The Ship That Never Returned 。機関車脱線事故後の1903年にチャールズ・Ｋ・ノエルとフレッド・Ｊ・リーウェイがリンチバーグとダンヴィル（ケンタッキー）間でスロットルを握りしめたまま亡くなった事実を歌にした。1923年までほとんど評判にもならなかったが、歌手のヘンリー・ホィットラーが彼のヴァージョンで録音しそれが最も初期のカントリー＆ウェスタンのヒットの一つとなった。ノエルとリーウェイは訴訟を起こし勝訴し解決することになり、それ以降のシート・ミュージックは三人の連名になったという。

他の初期のレコーディングとしては、ヴァーノン・ダルハートがベストセラーになった。他にカール・フェルトん、マグスィ・スパイナー、ハンク・スノウ、ケイト・スミス、エディ・アーノルド、ボクスカー・ウィリー、オズボーン・ブラザーズ、ウディ・ガスリー、ジョニー・キャッシュなどが録音している。
